In brief: Brazil’s retail sales rise in November

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for retail sales, showing that sales volumes in November increased by 0.1% from the previous month, and by 2.2% year-on-year. The accumulated sales volume in the 12 months until November was 1.5% higher compared to the previous 12-month period. According to an Ibge press release, the ‘Black Friday’ sale events at the end of November contributed to the positive monthly sales figure. Of the eight product categories measured, six registered monthly rises in sales. The categories which registered the greatest increases were office supplies, information & communications (+18.6%), furniture & home appliances (+4.5%), and fabrics, clothing, & footwear (+3.0%). The only categories to register monthly decreases were books, newspapers & stationery (-1.5%) and pharmaceutical, medical, and orthopaedic items & perfumes (-1.6%).
