*Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, has released new figures showing record tourism to Costa Rica in 2023. According to the ICT, 2.47m tourists visited the country in 2023 via air (which it has previously noted accounts for 90% of tourist arrivals), up 16.7% on 2022 and 2.2% in 2019 – the year before the coronavirus (Covid-19) struck. According to the same figures, 281,095 tourists arrived via air in December 2023, up 18% on December 2022. The ICT highlights that the US remains the main source of tourists, accounting for 1.43m of arrivals in 2023, while Europe accounted for 431,980.
