In brief: Uruguay to export bone-in meat to Israel

*Uruguay’s foreign ministry has announced that it will start to export bone-in beef and lamb to Israel. In a statement, the foreign ministry said Israeli health authorities had authorised the export of Uruguayan bone-in beef and lamb as of 8 January after Uruguay presented an “exhaustive report” giving health guarantees about the absence of foot-and-mouth disease and referring to its status, approved by the World Organisation for Animal Health (Woah), as a country free from the virus with vaccination. The first shipments will be sent once a model export health certificate has been agreed. According to the statement, the agreement was the result of the joint work of Uruguay’s ministry of livestock, agriculture, and fisheries (MGAP), foreign ministry, national meat institute (Inac), and Uruguay’s embassy in Israel. Beef was Uruguay’s top export in 2023, with a value of over US$2.1bn according to the government’s annual report on foreign trade, published on 3 January.
