In brief: Annual inflation continues upwards trend in Mexico

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released consumer price index figures December, which show that monthly inflation stood at 0.71% with the annual rate reaching 4.66%. This compares to monthly inflation of 0.64% in November when the annual rate stood at 4.32%. Annual inflation has edged up in the last two months after nine consecutive months of decline in 2023. According to Inegi, in December prices of agricultural products rose 3.25% compared to the previous month while the prices of energy & tariffs authorised by the government were up 0.05%. Core inflation, which excludes items subject to highly volatile prices, stood at 0.44% in monthly terms and 5.09% in annual terms. Within the core index, merchandise prices increased 0.32% on the previous month and while the price of services was up 0.58%. The rise in annual inflation in December occurs after it had decreased to 4.26% in October, its lowest value since February 2021.
