In brief: Second section of Mexico’s Tren Maya railway inaugurated

*Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has inaugurated the second part of his controversial Tren Maya tourist railway project. López Obrador posted a video on social media showing him riding the train to the city of Palenque in Chiapas state, having begun his journey in the resort city of Cancún in Quintana Roo state. This comes after the first part of the railway, running from the city of Campeche, capital of the eponymous state, to Cancún, was inaugurated on 15 December. On social media Quintana Roo state governor, Mara Lezama, posted a photo of herself riding the train with López Obrador, stating that it was a “historic moment and a benchmark of social justice for the southeast of Mexico”. López Obrador was also accompanied by officials including Public Security Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez and Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco. According to the government, the entire 1,554km railway will be operating by the end of February.
