Successful green light for US beef exports. On 9 November, Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña announced the reopening of the US market to Paraguayan beef after 25 years. This makes Paraguay one of just 18 countries that can export fresh beef to the US according to US Ambassador to Paraguay Marc Ostfield. The announcement was made after President Peña met with the US Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment Jose Fernandez, who was visiting Paraguay. In a statement, President Peña said that the news represented “a milestone in commercial bilateral relations and reflects the continuing commitment of both countries to strengthen cooperation on economic matters”, adding that it was the result of “arduous work and the dedication of Paraguayan producers”. The final decision was published by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the federal register on 14 November and comes into force on 14 December. According to the USDA, Paraguay exported around 65% of its beef production between 2018 and 2022.
