ARGENTINA: Can Milei’s moderate shock work?

The optimistic reading of the first month since Javier Milei was elected president of Argentina is that the firebrand libertarian has moderated some of his wonkier proposals and is pursuing a more pragmatic approach to fix the crisis-ridden economy. The more sombre view is that he is improvising on all fronts, will not have the means to implement half of what he wants, and utterly underestimates the risk of social backlash to draconian austerity measures. The truth is probably somewhere in between.
