Ecuador introduces power cuts amid energy crisis

Ecuador’s government introduced a programme of scheduled power cuts across the country on 26 October, each lasting up to four hours. The aim is to ration electricity use, with the authorities concerned that, for the first time in 13 years, the country’s electricity supply cannot meet demand. Many Ecuadoreans have responded critically to the power cuts, particularly in the country’s largest cities of Quito and Guayaquil, where the first blackouts hit at 8am, causing chaos as people attempted to make their way to school or work without internet access, traffic lights, and, in some areas, without traffic police able to resolve the confusion.
