SURINAME: Fatalities put spotlight on illegal mining

The national flag flew at half-mast over government buildings, schools, and ships in port in Suriname on 24 and 25 November to mourn the loss of life of at least 15 illegal miners buried in a massive landslide days earlier while digging for gold. The deaths have intensified demands for regulation of Suriname’s mining sector, although Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk acknowledged that this issue had been long-pending and previously postponed because of a lack of resources.
