Ecuador’s congress prioritises cooperation

Ecuador’s new national assembly was installed on 17 November and began holding sessions six months after President Guillermo Lasso dissolved it upon invoking the ‘muerte cruzada’ article in the constitution, paving the way for fresh elections and averting impeachment. The adverse composition of the national assembly, which was controlled by a hostile opposition, was one of the principal reasons that Lasso was forced into taking this action in the first place. His successor, Daniel Noboa, who takes office on 23 November, will face the same problem as Lasso: a weak presence in a legislature dominated by the opposition. His ability to manage this will dictate the success of his truncated 18-month term.
