 * The European Commission, the European Union (EU)’s executive branch, has announced €1.3m (US$1.4m) in humanitarian aid to Mexico in response to Hurricane Otis, which made landfall near the resort city of Acapulco in Guerrero state on 25 October. According to the European Commission, the funding will provide assistance to the most vulnerable, including shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as support for livelihoods and other basic needs. The EU has also activated its Copernicus satellite service to provide damage assessments, producing over 14 maps to support the Mexican authorities. The commission notes that EU humanitarian aid to Mexico and Central America for 2023 now totals €23m. According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef), an estimated 1.07m people need humanitarian assistance as a result of the hurricane. Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is due to deliver a general report today (23 November) from Acapulco on the progress of aid actions and the delivery of resources to families affected by the hurricane.
