* Mexico’s government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced that it has awarded two contracts to Starlink, the satellite firm of US business magnate Elon Musk, worth a combined maximum joint value of M$3.33bn (US$192m). According to a government statement Starlink has secured the contracts with Internet Telecomunicaciones para Todos, a subsidiary of state-owned electricity company Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), to provide free internet and connect mobile phone towers. The new contracts were announced in President López Obrador’s daily press conference yesterday. Speaking in the press conference, Carlos Emiliano Calderón Mercado, the government’s coordinator of national digital strategy, said that mobile phone coverage had expanded over the past year, from 91.9% at the end of 2022, to 94.5% currently.
