ARGENTINA: Spying scandal rocks Massa campaign

An investigation into a former police officer, arrested five months ago for spying on two judges, has uncovered a massive illegal spying operation in Argentina. The timing of the scandal could scarcely be any worse for Sergio Massa, the presidential candidate of the ruling Peronist coalition Unión por la Patria (UP). His rival, the far-right populist Javier Milei, is bound to hammer him over it in the presidential debate on 12 November, one week before the second round of elections. Massa will need to be well-prepared for some awkward questions. Several polls in recent days have put Milei ahead of him, albeit with a lead within the margin of error, but this scandal could fatally undermine Massa’s chances.
