São Paulo’s energy infrastructure tested by storms

Heavy rains and storms hit Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo, on 3 November, causing widespread power outages. According to state authorities, around 4m citizens throughout São Paulo state were affected by blackouts over the weekend. As of 7 November, local media reported that over 100,000 homes still did not have their power restored, prompting criticisms of the Italian energy company Enel, a private contractor which provides electricity to the São Paulo metropolitan area.
