MEXICO: EZLN reorganises amid Chiapas violence

Mexico’s leftist indigenous insurgent group, the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN), has announced a reorganisation of its structure as the 30th anniversary of its armed uprising nears. In a statement released on 5 November, the EZLN announced the restructuring but did not specify the reasons for it, although it once again denounced increasing violence in the south-eastern state of Chiapas, where it is based, indicating this is at least part of the reason. The reorganisation also comes ahead of a major electoral year in 2024, suggesting potential political motivations.
