*Alejandro Cambiaso, the president of the Dominican Republic’s association of health tourism (ADTS), an NGO, has presented the results of a study into health tourism in the country. Speaking at the sixth international conference of health tourism and wellbeing in Santo Domingo, Cambiaso stated that the sector generated US$1.32bn in 2022. In comments widely circulated in the local press, Cambiaso stated that 262,902 international tourists visited the Dominican Republic in 2022 for medical tourism, meaning they came to the country to procure medical or dental services. Cambiaso added that the sector is expected to grow further, with forecasts of around 500,000 medical tourists visiting the country in 2028. According to the Medical Tourism Index (MTI), a private industry research group, the Dominican Republic is the leading destination for medical tourism in the Caribbean and the second in Latin America, behind Costa Rica.
