BRAZIL: Lula suggests abandoning zero-deficit target

Government ministers had previously committed to achieving a zero fiscal deficit next year. However, on 27 October President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva gave a press conference in which he distanced himself from his government’s previous objective by suggesting that a zero-deficit target was not essential. His comments sparked concern over his government’s fiscal discipline.
