Petro’s ruling coalition humbled in Colombian elections

Colombia’s ruling left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition was dealt a stinging rebuke by voters in the 29 October regional elections, winning just two of 32 governorship races and failing to win mayoral elections in any of the country’s major cities. The cause of this disappointing result for President Gustavo Petro’s government lies in months of scandal and legislative gridlock. It could also owe to his own shift in style from compromise to confrontation, and the remedy may prove elusive. Some of Petro’s more reluctant allies in congress will feel emboldened to distance themselves from the government, now that public opinion seems to have turned against him, and align themselves instead with the opposition in opposing his ambitious social reform agenda.
