COSTA RICA: Chaves denies talks with gangs as homicides soar

Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves was recently compelled to deny claims published by Mexican newspaper El Universal that his government and drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) held talks last year in an effort to reduce homicides. The story broke days after the director of Costa Rica’s judicial investigation agency (OIJ), Randall Zúñiga, warned that the country has already registered more homicides this year than in the whole of 2022 – itself a record year for homicides – a situation attributed to the growing presence of DTOs in the national territory.
