MEXICO: Flagship health programme advances
Mexicans in 23 of the country’s 32 states will soon have access to free healthcare under the IMSS-Bienestar programme, a flagship initiative of the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Representatives from the 21 states governed by the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party, and two with governors from allied parties, signed up to the programme on 10 October. However, governors from the nine opposition-held states refused to sign up, indicating just one of the challenges facing the ambitious programme.
