VENEZUELA: Maduro strikes back as Machado wins primary

The primary election held by Venezuela’s opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) on 22 October saw María Corina Machado sail home with over 92% of the vote, eclipsing her nearest rival by around 87 percentage points. Yet it is deeply uncertain whether Machado, from the right-wing Vente Venezuela (VV), will appear on the ballot in next year’s presidential election; she remains barred from holding public office, and President Nicolás Maduro’s administration has now launched a criminal investigation claiming that the primary election was fraudulent.
