Noboa triumphs but Correísmo controls congress

Daniel Noboa will become the youngest head of state in Ecuador’s history, at 35, when he succeeds President Guillermo Lasso on 25 November. Noboa defeated Luisa González of the left-wing Revolución Ciudadana (RC) in the second round of presidential elections on 15 October. Foremost among the challenges to fall on his youthful shoulders will be addressing the country’s sharply deteriorating security situation and spiralling drug-related violence. He will have little time to make much of a difference, serving a truncated term that will end in May 2025, just 18 months after he takes office. Complicating matters for Noboa is the fact that, just like Lasso, he will have to reckon with a hostile congress, dominated by the RC, the party of his defeated rival, loyal to former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017).
