BRAZIL: Congressional inquiry blames Bolsonaro for 8 January riots

After around five months of investigations, the joint committee of inquiry (CPMI) in Brazil’s congress investigating anti-democratic acts approved its final report on 18 October. The inquiry has questioned individuals suspected of inciting riots or failing to defend the capital on 8 January, when thousands of supporters of Brazil’s right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) stormed the seats of the country’s democratic institutions in Brasília. The report recommended pressing charges against Bolsonaro in addition to 60 other individuals, including military personnel and agribusiness tycoons.
