In brief: International tourism continues to grow in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures showing that the country received 3.25m international tourists in August 2023, a 5.3% increase on the 3.09m who visited the country in the same month last year. This increase was driven by a 16.4% increase in cross-border tourists, who spend at least one night in Mexico but do not leave the border area, and who numbered 1.37m in August. In contrast, the number of tourists arriving by air dropped by 1.5% to 1.60m, while the number arriving by land fell by 2.2% to 276,947. According to Inegi, the foreign exchange brought into the country by international visitors decreased by 3.6% year-on-year to total US$2.13bn in August.
