Arce expulsion confirms rift in Bolivia’s MAS

Political infighting reached new heights this week in Bolivia with serious repercussions. The ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), riven by divisions for months, took the decision during its national congress to expel President Luis Arce and Vice President David Choquehuanca from the party’s ranks, on 4 October, after they failed to attend. The MAS also anointed former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) as the party’s sole presidential candidate in 2025.
