Thousands of supporters of Guatemala’s president-elect Bernardo Arévalo have again taken to the streets across the country demanding the resignations of the US-sanctioned head of the attorney general’s office, María Consuelo Porras, and her colleagues. Called by Arévalo, whose 20 August presidential run-off victory threatens the discredited political establishment with which Porras is aligned, the protests were prompted by new raids on the supreme electoral tribunal (TSE) ordered by her office, which is also seeking to strip TSE judges of immunity from prosecution.
