BRAZIL: Conservatives in congress retaliate against supreme court

Conservative lawmakers with ties to the agribusiness lobby in congress (known as the ‘bancada ruralista’) and to the evangelical caucus have expressed outrage at two recent rulings by Brazil’s supreme court (STF). On 21 September the STF ruled against the ‘marco temporal’ legal thesis, an interpretation which argued that indigenous communities can only lay claim to land they occupied as of October 1988. On 22 September the STF’s president, Rosa Weber, opened a session on whether to decriminalise abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, with Weber casting her vote in favour of decriminalisation.
