Crackdown on Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua raises questions

Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua organised crime group wields influence as far away as Chile, but its nerve centre has long been the Tocorón prison in the northern Venezuelan state of Aragua. In one of the largest security deployments in the country’s recent history, over 11,000 soldiers and police officers stormed the prison on 20 September. It has since transpired that numerous high-ranking members of the Tren de Aragua, including the gang’s leader, had escaped in the days leading up to the raid.
