Guyana’s Ali shores up US ties

Guyana: On 14 September during a trip to the US, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali met with the administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Samantha Power to discuss food and climate security, migration management, and inclusive economic development. The previous day President Ali and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo held a meeting, in which Raimondo announced the opening of a US Commercial Service office within the US embassy in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown. Also on 13 September, Ali spoke with US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols as part of a conversation hosted by US think tank Inter-American Dialogue. In the conversation, Nichols praised Ali for his commitment to strengthening democracy in Guyana, for addressing challenges posed by the climate crisis, and for cooperating with the US in helping Haiti, which is in the grip of a humanitarian, political, and economic crisis. Ali expressed his commitment to extending the prosperity of Guyana to the rest of the region and building an economy that is resilient, sustainable, and competitive. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Guyana’s economy grew faster than any other country in the world in 2022, expanding by 62.3%, as a wave of oil wealth transforms the economic and political landscape. Ali expressed his aim for Guyana to become a global leader in climate, energy, and food security, saying that the nation’s inclusion as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council from January 2024 will contribute to this.
