* Dutch brewing company Heineken has announced plans to construct a new brewery in southern Mexico. The brewery, which will be built in Kanasín municipality, Yucatán state, represents an investment of M$8bn (US$468m). Construction is set to begin in 2024, and it is expected that operations will begin in 2026. This will be the Heineken’s eighth brewery in the country. According to Guillaume Duverdier, the director general of Heineken México, who gave a speech at a ceremony announcing the new project, the brewery will largely cater to local demands, with 90% of its output designated for the south-east Mexican market and the remainder being sent to the US. He also emphasised that the project would focus on sustainability, using renewable energy and technologically advanced methods to reduce the amount of water necessary for beer production. Speaking at the ceremony, Mexico’s Economy Minister Raquel Buenrostro stated that the new brewery was part of the policy of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government to attract investment in the south-east of Mexico. According to Yucatán state governor Mauricio Vila, of the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), the project will generate 2,000 direct and indirect jobs in the state.
