It had always seemed possible that Mexico’s former foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard (2018-2023) would break from the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) if he were not selected to be its 2024 presidential candidate. This split is now fast becoming a reality. On 11 September, Ebrard announced he would leave the party if it did not repeat its presidential candidate selection process, in which he alleges there were multiple irregularities.
