ARGENTINA: Bullrich tries to harness JxC provincial success

“This is the moment to destroy Kirchnerismo.” This was the reaction of Patricia Bullrich, the presidential candidate of the traditional right-of-centre Juntos por el Cambio (JxC), to the coalition’s victory in the Santa Fe gubernatorial elections on 10 September. There is a strong chance that the JxC will deliver another blow to Kirchnerismo, the previously dominant strain of the ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists), in the Chaco provincial elections on 17 September. If it then retains the governorship of Mendoza, as expected, the week after that, it would give the JxC its best-ever run of results leading into presidential elections on 22 October. And yet, paradoxically, the big question lurking behind Bullrich’s triumphalism is whether this is the moment that the JxC could be destroyed, with current polls showing her in third place and facing elimination in the first round.
