In brief: International tourism continues to grow in Mexico

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures on international visitors, which show that Mexico received 3.97m international tourists in July 2023, a 7.7% increase on the 3.68m who visited the country in July 2022 and up from 3.61m who visited in June 2023. The most significant increase noted by the Inegi report was the number of tourists who entered the country by crossing land borders in July, which grew by 27.3% year-on-year, representing more than 1.54m people. The number of tourists arriving by plane rose 0.2% to 2.02m. However, according to Inegi, total spending by international visitors was down 2.3% year-on-year in July 2023, decreasing from US$2.55bn in July 2022 to US$2.49bn in July 2023. The average spend per international tourist decreased by 9.3% year-on-year with tourists spending an average of US$628.12 in July compared to US$692.33 in the same month in 2022.
