Haiti: On 30 August the US embassy in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince issued a security alert advising all US citizens to leave the island nation “as soon as possible”. The alert was issued due to “infrastructure challenges” and “the current security situation” with violent crime proliferating as armed gangs now control vast swathes of the country – a situation which has escalated since the 2021 assassination of Haiti’s president, Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021).  Victims of such violent crime regularly include US citizens, according to the US State Department. On 28 August embassy staff were confined to the embassy building and residential compounds due to a shootout involving the police in the area. In its security alert, the US embassy recommends that US citizens should travel either commercially or privately from Haiti via Haiti’s international airports (Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien [Nord department]). It also recommends that US citizens in Haiti book their flights in advance as seats may fill up quickly and monitor local news to ensure a safe departure from Port-au-Prince. US citizens are also advised to take extreme precautions when travelling in Haiti and avoid crowds and roadblocks.
