HONDURAS: Missing a key deadline

Honduras’s 128-member legislative assembly has missed a key deadline – the appointment of the country’s new attorney general for a five-year term. With President Xiomara Castro, whose leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) lacks a legislative majority, decrying a “boycott” by the opposition, the failure to name the new attorney general to oversee the prosecution of crimes is increasingly drawing concern given Castro’s declared priority of tackling corruption in a justice system in dire need of overhaul.
