COLOMBIA: ELN talks produce humanitarian accord

Against a challenging backdrop, peace talks with the Colombian guerrilla group Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) are continuing to advance. A fourth round of negotiations between the ELN and President Gustavo Petro’s administration concluded in Venezuela on 4 September with a pledge to cooperate on humanitarian actions in two designated ‘crisis zones’. In another hopeful development for the government’s peace plans, four days of exploratory discussions were held last week with the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), the largest grouping of dissident units of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group, after a bilateral ceasefire with the EMC was partially suspended in May.
