ECUADOR: Drug-related violence fuels electoral tensions

Car bombs, prison mutinies, and more death threats have heightened tensions ahead of the second round of Ecuador’s presidential elections on 15 October. The catalyst for the latest unrest appears to have been the decision by the authorities to send in a 2,200-strong army and police task force to conduct a search of the prison in Latacunga, the capital of the northern Andean highland province of Cotopaxi, on 30 August, and the recent transfer of a drug gang leader from Latacunga to a maximum security jail.
