Mexican presidential picks unveiled

Mexico’s ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) and opposition Frente Amplio por México (FAM) have both named their 2024 presidential candidates. For Morena, former Mexico City (CDMX) mayor Claudia Sheinbaum (2018-2023) will compete to succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in June next year. Faced with the uphill battle of unseating Morena and bringing the broad opposition coalition into government is Xóchitl Gálvez. Given the pre-campaign period for the elections has not yet begun, each have officially been crowned the ‘coordinators’ of their respective movements, but there is no hiding the real significance of the nominations. The race for 2024 is now well and truly on.
