ARGENTINA: Murders put focus on public security

The latest Global Peace Index of Australia-headquartered think tank the Institute for Economics and Peace’s (IEP), published in July, highlighted that violent crime has become less of a concern in Argentina. However, this did not appear to translate into public opinion ahead of the country’s presidential primaries (Paso) on 13 August, as the murder of an 11-year-old in a robbery shortly before the vote put security issues high on the agenda – possibly to the benefit of the far-right anti-system candidate Javier Milei who defied the polls to come out on top.
