BRAZIL: Reversing Bolsonaro’s pro-gun legacy

Brazil’s government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced a package of security initiatives on 21 July, the ‘Programa de Ação na Segurança’ (PAS). Among the measures was a decree signed by President Lula which would tighten gun control. The PAS launch came a day after the public security think tank Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (FBSP) released a report on crime statistics in 2022, which noted with concern the expansion of Brazil’s market for legal and illegal firearms in recent years.
