On 28 August Mexico’s defence ministry (Sedena) announced it had deployed 1,200 members of the national guard (GN) and army to Michoacán state. This came in response to a series of road blockades and arson attacks on convenience stores the previous day, which had affected the municipalities of Buenavista, Uruapan, and Apatzingán. Although the state and federal governments were quick to announce that the situation was under control, the incidents - which are reminiscent of a spate of violence that swept across five states in August 2022 [WR-22-33] – come as insecurity looks likely to be the main concern for voters ahead of presidential elections next year.
