MEXICO: Speculation mounts over exit of search commission chief
The abrupt manner in which Karla Quintana, the head of Mexico’s national search commission (CNB), resigned on 23 August has fuelled questions around the true reasons for her exit. The government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has claimed her departure was part of a natural cycle of change. However, some human rights organisations and media outlets have suggested Quintana resigned due to disagreements over the updating of the national register of disappeared persons, claiming the government is using the process to reduce disappearance figures artificially.
