CHILE: Communist minister faces teachers’ strike challenge

Around 5,000, or 37%, of Chile’s 13,500 state schools were closed on 29 August, marking the beginning of an indefinite teachers’ strike. The stoppage, involving over 100,000 teachers, is both a challenge and a political opportunity for Nicolás Cataldo, appointed only days earlier as the country’s first-ever education minister who is also a member of the Partido Comunista de Chile (PCCh).
