PANAMA: Deputies to debate Cobre Panamá contract

Panama’s national assembly began discussing a new 20-year mining contract with Cobre Panamá at committee level on 21 August. Cobre Panamá, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals (FQM) of Canada, runs the largest open cast copper mine in Central America. Since copper exports began in June 2019, the mine has expanded to contribute 4.8% of Panama’s GDP, as well as providing over 5,000 direct jobs and eight times as many again indirect jobs.
