BRAZIL: Further progress for bill to limit indigenous demarcations

A committee overseeing agriculture in Brazil’s senate, the Comissão de Agricultura e Reforma Agrária (CRA), voted on 23 August to approve, with 13 votes in favour and three against, the controversial ‘Marco Temporal’ legislation, which would require indigenous communities to prove they had occupied their land before 1988 to apply for protected demarcated status. The approval of the agriculture committee was further criticised by indigenous rights activists.
