BRAZIL: Lula denies that Brics is an anti-G7

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva flew to South Africa this week to attend the leaders’ summit of the Brics group of developing economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), which took place from 22-24 August in Johannesburg. Much of the rhetoric from the other Brics leaders had suggested a challenge to a Western-led global order. But Lula did not adopt rhetoric as hostile as Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, instead emphasising during the first day of the summit that “we do not want to be a counterpoint to the G7”.
