HAITI: Calls build for international police deployment

Over the past week, two major protests have taken place in Haiti’s capital over insecurity – a situation which continues to worsen as gangs exploit the power vacuum left by the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise (2017-2021). With the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) and US-based NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) also releasing new reports outlining the gravity of the crisis, speculation continues to mount regarding the prospect of a Kenya-led international police deployment for which the United Nations (UN), US, and other members of the foreign community have expressed support.
