ECUADOR: Campaigning closes under the shadow of violence

Ecuador’s presidential campaign drew to a subdued close on 17 August, three days before the country goes to the polls for a snap general election on 20 August. The assassination of Fernando Villavicencio, the candidate for the centrist Movimiento Construye, has thrown the election into disarray, and his replacement, Christian Zurita, is taking extreme security precautions. Whilst Zurita may see a surge in support as a result of public revulsion at Villavicencio’s murder, the security hardliner Jan Topic will also be hoping for a last-minute boost ahead of a likely run-off vote.
