El Salvador: On 7 August US Secretary of State
Antony Blinken met with El Salvador’s foreign minister,
Alexandra Hill, to discuss bilateral relations and various regional issues. Following the meeting, Blinken tweeted that they had addressed topics including
“good governance, human rights, inclusive economic prosperity, and migration management in Central America”, saying that El Salvador remained
“an important partner in advancing these regional goals”. Hill tweeted that
“we will continue building a solid and stable relationship, based on mutual respect that generates more opportunities for development, investment, and trade between both countries”. On 9 August Hill then met US Secretary of Homeland Security
Alejandro Mayorkas where the two discussed “
efforts to foster safe and humane border management.” A tweet by the Department of Homeland Security says that El Salvador “
continues to be a key partner in these processes”. Hill’s trip to the US comes as US-Salvadorean relations remain strained over President
Nayib Bukele’s dismantling of democratic institutions and policies such as his government’s ongoing use of the state of emergency to tackle gangs, which has drawn major human rights concerns.
