VENEZUELA: Authorities take on the Red Cross

Venezuela’s supreme court (TSJ) issued a ruling on 4 August ordering an intervention in the Venezuelan Red Cross and firing its president, Mario Enrique Villarroel, who has headed the NGO for over 40 years. The TSJ’s move, which also saw it appoint an ally of President Nicolás Maduro as interim Red Cross president, was decried by NGOs as another example of the government’s crackdown on civic space.
